Paul's Pick for May, a Free Article on the Paris Mosque from The Jewish Quarterly Review

Paul's Pick for May is "Did the Paris Mosque Save Jews? A Mystery and Its Memories" by University of Cincinnati historian Ethan Katz. The article appears in the Spring 2012 issue of The Jewish Quarterly Review.

Katz's JQR article offers the first scholarly analysis of the collective memory and the history of the Grand Mosque of Paris as a haven for Jews during the Holocaust. The 2011 French feature film Les Hommes Libres brought unprecedented attention to the mosque’s efforts to save Jews during the Occupation. Many press accounts and even “expert” commentaries on the film conveyed an almost breathless enthusiasm and framed it as an invaluable pedagogical tool, but Katz reminds us of the conflicting historical evidence around this story. Katz sheds new light on how Jews, Muslims, and broader French society seek to confront the shifting stakes of the Holocaust and the Second World War in the twenty-first century.

Paul's Pick for March, a Free Article from The Eighteenth Century: Theory and Interpretation

Paul's Pick for the Ides of March is "Sympathy for the Sovereign: Sovereignty, Sympathy, and the Colonial Relation in Edward Gibbon's The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire," by Peter DeGabriele of Mississippi State University. The article appears in The Eighteenth Century: Theory and Interpretation Vol. 53.1 Spring 2012.

DeGabriele writes:

Sympathy, then, is questioned not only in its inapplicability to geological masses, but also in its reach, in its ability to stretch its combinatory powers over large distances. It is precisely this capacity of sympathy that gets called into question within the realm of human affairs throughout The Decline and Fall. In particular, Gibbon questions the ability of sympathy to bridge the vast social gap between sovereign and subject, and also between Imperial center and colonial periphery. In doing so, he questions what had become a dominant theme in eighteenth-century political philosophy at his time of writing: the replacement of the vertical bond with the sovereign as the agent of social cohesion, by the horizontal force of sympathy.

Paul's Pick for February, Freedom, the Common Good, and the Rule of Law: Lippmann and Hayek on Economic Planning by Ben Jackson, appears in the latest issue of the Journal of the History of Ideas.

In the article, Jackson writes:

Walter Lippmann’s case against economic planning, formed in response to certain aspects of the New Deal, provided a striking first approximation of key arguments that [Friedrich] Hayek would later articulate in his own work: the objection to economic planning on the grounds that it would destroy not just valued economic liberties but also civil and political freedoms; an emphasis on the importance of a certain form of legal order for the preservation of liberty; and the need for critics of planning to offer a positive liberal reform agenda that was compatible with this understanding of the law.

Paul's Pick for January, Defining Early Modern Pornography: The Case of Venus and Adonis by Chantelle Thauvette, appears in the latest issue of the Journal for Early Modern Cultural Studies.

"In the 2006 third edition of The Oxford English Dictionary, the definition of pornography was revised to include a distinction between the “erotic” and “aesthetic” feelings sexually explicit representations produce in their audiences. While this distinction is not new, its recent inclusion in the definition of pornography invites us to explore sexually explicit early modern literature, such as Shakespeare’s Venus and Adonis, in a new light," writes Thauvette.

On "Humanitarian" Adoption (Madonna in Malawi) by Kerry Bystrom, appears in the Fall 2012 issue of Humanity. The essay explores media representations of transnational adoption to chart northern perceptions of the practice. "Understandings of adoption as rescue and violent exploitation, of egoistic and altruistic, of gift, theft, and constrained choice, undercut and overlay each other," writes Bystrom.

A Special offer on the New Conservation Journal, Change Over Time

Penn Press and the University of Pennsylvania School of Design are pleased to announce the launch of Change Over Time: An International Journal of Conservation and the Built Environment.

Change Over Time is a semiannual journal focused on publishing original, peer-reviewed research papers and review articles on the history, theory, and praxis of conservation and the built environment. Each issue is dedicated to a particular theme as a method to promote critical discourse on contemporary conservation issues from multiple perspectives both within the field and across disciplines. The inaugural issue, Repair and Reparation, features topics ranging from the conservation of statuary at Angkor Wat, to the development of Philadelphia’s public squares, to the significance of historical cities in a globalized world. Forthcoming issues will address topics such Economics and Heritage, Nostalgia, Climate Change and Landscape, Adaptation, and The Venice Charter at 50.

Editor in Chief Frank Matero sees a mission in the new journal. “If there ever was a moment when conservation of the built environment had something to contribute to the current state of social and political strife, economic recession and environmental destruction, it is now," says Matero. "We advocate for conservation because objects and places hold important information, associations, and meaning; because they embody social and cultural memory that, if lost, would make the world a less rich and connected place in which to live.”
